Gibraltar is a member of
the EU, having joined as an associate member with the UK in 1973. It
is a British Dependent Territory but with internal self-government. Gibraltar
is a member of the European Community and enjoys status within the
community however it is exempt from the common customs tariff, the
common agricultural policy and value added tax.
Gibraltar's parliament, the House of Assembly elects a Chief Minister and a cabinet
who are responsible for domestic affairs.
Under the 1969 constitution, the United Kingdom is responsible for certain matters. These
include defence, foreign affairs, internal security and financial stability. |
